What does PAR AILLEURS mean in French?

There are various ways to translate “par ailleurs”. You could say furthermore, moreover, otherwise…

Have you ever heard “en outre”? These two words together mean additionally. Be sure to make the liaison to connect them.

Here’s an example:

  • Les cours sont intéressants. En outre, les professeurs sont très compétents >>> The courses are interesting. Additionally, the teachers are very competent.



Say moreover in French.

This linking word will remind you of the first one par ailleurs. It’s a bit shorter: d’ailleurs and it means moreover. Note that the final letter is silent.

How would you use it? Like this:

  • Il a beaucoup d’expérience. D’ailleurs, il a travaillé dans plusieurs pays. >>> He’s got a lot of experience. Moreover, he’s worked in several countries.

Once more, this expression looks like one you have just seen: de plus. However, this time it’s en plus. It signifies besides.

 Here’s an illustration:

This expression is the literal translation of “that said”: cela dit.

Let me show you how it works:

  • Il est un bon leader. Cela dit, il pourrait améliorer sa communication >>> He’s a good leader. That said, he could improve his communication.
